(On February 8, 1944, Aimorés) is a Brazilian photographer, a representative of documentary photography, one of the greatest photojournalists in the world.
The decision to give up his career as an economist and switch to photography came in 1973. Initially, he worked on news assignments, more inclined to documentary.
Salgado collaborated with the photo agencies "Sygma" and "Gamma", but in 1979 he joined "Magnum Photos", from which he left in 1994, together with his wife Lelia Vanik to open his own Agency "Amazonas Images" in Paris. He is particularly known for social documentary photography of workers in underdeveloped countries.
Salgado independently works on large projects, many of which are published in books: "Other America", "Sahel", "Workers", "Migration", "Genesis". The last three consist of hundreds of images from all over the world. His images from the Serra Pelada gold mine in Brazil were the most famous.
Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado is a Brazilian documentary photographer and one of the largest photojournalists in the world. He visited more than 100 countries where he collected material for his photographic projects. Exhibitions of his works are presented around the world.
Salgado has been UNICEF goodwill Ambassador since 2001. He became an honorary member of The American Academy of arts and Sciences in 1992 and was awarded the Royal society of photography's centennial medal and the honourable scholarship (HonFRPS) in 1993.
From 2004 to 2011, Salgado worked on the project "Genesis". It consists of a series of photographs of wildlife, landscapes, and human communities that continue to live in accordance with their traditions and culture.
In September and October 2007, Salgado showed photos of workers from coffee plantations in India, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Brazil to the Brazilian Embassy in London. He wanted to raise public awareness about the origin of the popular drink.
Together with Leyla Sebastian, he has been working since the 1990s on the restoration of a small part of the forest in Brazil. In 1998, they managed to turn this region into a reserve and create the Instituto Terra, which is dedicated to reforestation, protection and environmental education.
